BODW2014 Kick-Off Discusses Technology, Advertising, Sustainability for Design

July 2, 2014

BODW 2014 begins with a three day conference spanning across disciplines in gaming, advertising, technology and sustainability for design. Save the date now!

Technology for Design: Global Gaming Business & Innovations

“Games are the new normal.”

Al Gore

If you've ever wondered what it takes to create a quirky, fun gaming app which led its parent company towards a multi-billion-dollar IPO, come have a listen at this year's Business of Design Week (BODW), where the creator of Candy Crush Saga will discuss the design process behind the popular app. To kick off the week-long design conference this December, Riccardo Zacconi, CEO of game design company King, will talk about how his team put together the incredibly successful time-waster. Not to be outdone, David Polfeldt, the CEO of gaming company Massive Entertainment, will host a seminar of his own. Since Massive Entertainment is releasing the much-hyped role playing game Tom Clancy's The Division (rumoured to have the best graphics ever) next year, he is likely going to discuss tips on designing a great user experience.

Brand Building With Stories, Culture & Design

“To survive, you must tell stories.”

Umberto Eco

Story telling in advertisements is one of the many topics that will be discussed in the upcoming seminars on brand building in culture and design. Perhaps the poster boy for innovative, cost-friendly Swedish design, furniture company IKEA is also inventive in their marketing campaigns. The 'story telling' approach to their catalogues and ads are thought provoking and effective.  To illustrate, one of IKEA's look books has a colourful photo of a boy examining a sketchbook in his bedroom, which is decked out with a white bookshelf, a small rocking chair and a starry-sky printed bedspread. Red lettering in the corner of the page says, "Make room for imagination. A comfy rocking-chair and books stored on low shelves help keep full focus on the stories." The catalogue gently guides consumers to imagine and describe what designing their kid's bedroom might be like, hence the 'story telling' approach of the ad.

DesignEd Asia: Making a Sustainable Living

Organized by a trio of design incubators (Hong Kong Design Institute, Hong Kong Design Centre and School of Design of Hong Kong Polytechnic University), this series of seminars promotes design education, sustainable living and creative entrepreneurs.
