Programme Details

DETOUR consists of a series of programmes incorporating the most original, bold and stimulating ideas from Hong Kong and across the globe. Conceived in 2004 as a collateral series of events to Business of Design Week (BODW), DETOUR aims to create a knowledge network of young talents, emerging designers and artists. Designed with the intention of engaging the larger population and bringing the entire city together to celebrate the creative ventures, DETOUR has consistently been recognised by creative industries, educational partners and business sectors as one of the most popular events in Hong Kong.

 

 

We believe that design, innovation and creativity are vital for a vibrant culture, economy and society to pursue sustainable competitiveness. DETOUR is honoured to play a role in positioning Hong Kong as a hub for Greater China’s design capabilities. Our partner PMQ will play host to the week-long DETOUR 2014 and will no doubt stage another inspiring experience for our audience.

The "Technology for Design" session rounds up world-class technology experts in the industry and academia to share cutting-edge know-how and the latest trends, and how they can be synergised to create new business opportunities.

 

 

One of 12 themed sessions, "Global Gaming Business & Innovations" will kick off the week-long BODW on 1 December 2014.World renowned game designers and creators will share successful cases and insights, covering a wide range of topics such as game theory, methodology, user experience design, development of global hit games and Playful Experience.Other topics include innovative ways to enhance business performance for the gaming industry, marketing campaigns and the training industry.

"DesignEd Asia Conference" is jointly presented by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design (SD), Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) [a member of VTC Group] and Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC).

"Plenary Session I:Living Design" is the theme of Business of Design Week (BODW) 2014, co-presented by Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC) and Sweden, BODW's 2014 partner country.  

 

Swedish design was last showcased at BODW in 2004 and much has taken place since.Aesthetic norms and traditional ways of working are constantly being reassessed and tested.Emotional values have grown to be just as important as function.After a decade of design evolution, Sweden is proud to return to BODW this year.The theme "Sweden – Living Design" falls under four sub-headings:

 

Live it:Sustainability, Green Tech, Gastronomy, Interior (design)

Wear it:Fashion, Wearable Technology, Smart Textiles, Headphones

Work it:Health/Elderly Care, Ergonomics, Interaction, IT Service Design

Do it:Leisure, Gaming, Music, Sport

 

The theme is based on common values that underpin Swedish society:openness, innovation, creativity, functionality and sustainability.It embodies the longstanding Scandinavian design ideal that quality design should be available to all.To Swedes, design focuses on more than just aesthetics.During the session, a world-famous Swedish architect will elaborate on the new ideas and technology for creating environmental friendly architecture, while the designer of an iconic brand will share how Democratic Design is applied to develop cost-effective, sustainable and ultimately, practical-yet-stylish products.You will also find out how the award-winning architect from Sweden's neighbour came up with provocative designs, so join us to learn more about Northern Europe's newest ideas and novelty projects!

A new addition to BODW, "Culture & the City" is a two-part session that will take place over the week.Part I will feature Mr. Shigeru Ban, 2014 laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, who will discuss his innovative paper architectures.Two international artchitectural design studios will also speak on how they reinforced the culture of this city with attainable design and integral methodology, as well as their perspectives on the controversial project of West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD).In Part II, global industry leaders will explore the fusion of art, culture and engineering into urban spaces and planning.From large scale sculptures to modern installations in public areas, a wide range of distinctive and thought-provoking ideas will be discussed.This is a key to building the future that should not be missed!

The "Sustainability & Design" session will look into creative green ideas for automotive, agricultural, clothing and product design. Sustainable leaders from Sweden and Hong Kong will share intelligence in fashion design and sustanibility, then elaborate their efforts in reducing pollution in design process and materials.They will also analyse the future and development of urban agriculture, as well as share their experiences in upcycling unwanted materials into high-quality, ground-breaking products.Hands up if you want to get hands-on in designing our sustainable futures together!“

“Designed by HK” is a series of curated sharing sessions that lead up to Business of Design Week (BODW) 2014,  an annual flagship programme established and organised by Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC).This series provides an interactive platform to promote successful case studies and design excellence in communication, fashion, multi-media and product design, as well as other design disciplines."Designed by HK" is also a showcase for promising creative young talents in Hong Kong to share their experiences and philosophies on design and branding. 

 

Prominent Japanese industrial design master Mr. Naoto Fukasawa inaugurated the series on July 10th with a dialogue on how Hong Kong can take on an important role in the world through design and innovation.Other guest speakers on the panel included local designers from Outofstock, ten Design Stationery, Huzi Design, thecaveworkshop, Graphic Airlines, Daydream Nation and upcycling product designer Mr. Kevin Cheung.

 

The "Designed by HK" sessions will run through to the end of November, so be sure to stay tuned and join us in our exploration of design.

Design for Asia Awards has been one of the flagship programmes of Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC) since 2003.

 

Asia is a vast, growing and rapidly maturing market and home to half of the world's population.Its unique characteristics are increasingly important design considerations for designers and enterprises across the world, which has created considerable impact on finished products, interiors, apparel and communications. Every year, Design for Asia Awards attracts quality entries by established designers and emerging talents from Hong Kong and all over the world.

 

The Design for Asia Awards celebrates design excellence and acknowledges outstanding designs with Asian perspectives.It seeks to raise awareness amongst businesses and the public about the value of good design as an essential component in business success, as well as the collaboration towards a sustainable, higher quality of life for all.  

 

The DFA Awards Presentation Ceremony will acknowledge award-winning companies and designers from around the world through two special awards - the Design for Asia Awards and the Hong Kong Young Design Talents Award. These awards aim to encourage designers to continue achieving business success by incorporating their experience and ideas into good design that reflects or impacts the Asian lifestyle.

Organised by the Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC), the BODW Gala Dinner will set the stage for celebrating design excellence with winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award, Design Leadership Award, and World’s Outstanding Chinese Designer Award. Close to 800 guests will grace this exclusive event, including policy makers, business leaders, design masters, opinion leaders, design practitioners, as well as professionals and friends of HKDC from Hong Kong and all over the world.

 

 

Highlights this year include an authentic Swedish performance, 'Lucia' and a first-of-its-kind culinary experience orchestrated by Michelin-starred Swedish Chef Stefano Catenacci, followed by a finale of Swedish cultural performances. As one of Asia’s major design and innovation events, the HKTDC Inno Design Tech Expo (IDT Expo) also serves as an international marketplace for professional design services, business technology solutions and IP trading.

 

The HKDC Pavilion has been a highlight at the Inspiration Hall of IDT Expo for many years. The 2014 edition will continue to exhibit outstanding designer products and showcase the outstanding works of the winners of Design for Asia Awards. Visitors can also browse through the collection at the Book Corner for creative ideas from all over the world or participate in stimulating workshops at the Education Corner. Both are jointly organised by Hong Kong Design Institute and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design as initiatives to inspire the local young creative talents.

BIP Asia Forum is jointly presented by the HKSAR Government, Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Hong Kong Design Centre. This forum brings IP professionals and business leaders from all over the world to discuss the latest developments in the IP world, and to explore business collaboration opportunities. Building on the success of the previous two editions, BIP Asia Forum 2013 attracted 60 prominent speakers and drew more than 1,700 IP professionals and industry players from 24 countries and regions.

Global Design Network (GDN) was inaugurated in 2005 as an annual event concurrent with the Business of Design Week (BODW).

 

Over the past 8 years, leaders of more than 30 influential design organisations from around the world have been invited to this roundtable event and contributed valuable ideas. Building upon this groundwork, the Hong Kong Federation of Design Association is creating a network of member-associations that share the GDN’s mission in sustaining communication and facilitating future partnership amongst leading design organisations.

 

The objectives of GDN are to foster mutual understanding and collaboration between Asia and the rest of the world through design; to facilitate communication and future collaboration between designers of different nationalities alongisde the formation of exchange missions; and to share information on major commercial, cultural or infrastructural projects wherein cross-border business opportunities for the design sector can be identified.
